Managing the boss who finds it difficult to let go

Ahh, the beauties of being promoted - but these can often be slightly dampened by the boss who doesn't want to let you off your leash just yet. That's ok for the first few months, but any longer, and you can be left feeling demoralised and lose self-confidence. Try this:

1. Identify their motivation for this behaviour. What's your boss's reason for doing this? Is it that they care and want you to make a success of things, or is it because they don't want to let go? Finding out the reason can often help you understand, but importantly can also give you the basis to create a strategy for combating their reluctance to let go.

2. Do not over-react or get frustrated. They have their reasons and are still the boss, and often are the ones who entrusted you with this role in the first place.

3. Create a strategy. Whatever the reason, your best way forward is to consider what can change their minds? What do you need to do to reassure them that leaving things in your capable hands will benefit them and the company? One example would be a boss who doesn't feel sure that you are ready. Tell them that you will provide them with a weekly update on how you are getting on and that their experience and thoughts will be valuable in a more formal setting. This puts you in the driving seat whilst also keeping them in the loop.

4. Put your plan into action. If it doesn't work, then try an alternative, or maybe you are not right about their motives, so go back and look at this again.
